Critical Guidelines on Improving Industrial Pump Performance

Amaury Picard

The industrial environment relies on pumps to drive the flow of fluids around the operation. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that these components are functioning optimally to prevent unscheduled downtime and subsequent financial losses. If you have recently purchased pumping machinery for water, oil or other fluid, you should follow the manufacturer's recommendation on maintenance. In addition, consider using these simple guidelines to improve long-term performance.

Prevent Overheating

Overheating is a relatively common issue in industrial pumps, and it can contribute to malfunction, inefficiency and failure. Therefore, you should actively limit the occurrence of high equipment temperature. Most pumps for heavy duty commercial usage are fitted with cooling fans. Keep these clean from grease buildup and remove cobwebs, leaves and any debris from the area. If you have noticed unusual heating of the pump, there is probably restriction of the flow of the liquid in the pump. The system will need to be shut down temporarily to clear out the inner components.

Check the Strainer

Industrial pumps have suction strainers installed in the system to prevent entry of contaminants. In simple terms, these devices are designed to handle fluids, and solid particles will interfere with the operation and even damage the internal pump components. Therefore, you should regularly check the strainer to ensure that it is clearing the debris efficiently from the tank. In addition, this component should be cleared out to improve its performance. If the filter keeps getting blocked even after proper cleaning or replacement, you are probably using the wrong type. Consult your pump supplier for a reliable recommendation that matches your requirements.

Inspect System Seals

There are seals placed in a pumping system to prevent loss of fluid and subsequent inefficiencies. These seals are installed in the suction lines, hoses connected to the pump and around the fittings. If you are using pipes with pipe plugs and even gauge threads, you should use some pipe dope. This material will act as thread sealing compound or chemical sealant and prevent potential leaks. You can replace removable sealing components and even the damaged hoses to restore efficient flow.

Additional Tips

If you have a steel pump in an industrial space that is saline or humid, you should spray the external surfaces with an anti-corrosion spray. It is also advisable to check the pump lubrication bearings periodically and replace as needed. Finally, you should engage an industrial pump repair technician if you notice problems such as the pump clogging recurrently, excessive noise during operation or unexplained decline in the output.
